A Chain of Six Mitzvot – 23:26-33

A Block of Mitzvot That Comes Together

The most important of them – you shall not desecrate My holy name

And I shall be sanctified among the children of Israel

The emphasis is on the desecration of the glory of the Lord.  Similarly, the opposite should be done – to sanctify His name, that is, to increase His glory in the world

And ostensibly we are talking about Israel. What about the sons of Noah? Does the thing concern them as well?

We will read the section so that you can answer the question yourself

1 An  ox or a lamb that shall be born, and shall be seven days under his mother.

The necklace is tied to the glory of God

The Book of Education – The Torah respects and has mercy on the mother who is attached to the baby. Especially in the first week

The subject is important to the Torah, because

The attribute of mercy got its name from this natural feeling of compassion of the mother, her “womb”

Eve called the name of the attribute of mercy as she held her son Cain

“I bought a man with YHWH.” Here the name YHWH alone appears for the first time in the Torah

(In the Garden of Eden, she appears side by side with God)

Feelings of love and compassion and good hope for the future filled her heart

And she understood how Yah-Veh felt about us.

Of course, this is a poetic language, because a person’s feelings should not be attributed to the Kabba

Obviously, this emotion of pity is a natural reflex for the preservation of sex.  Without him, the mother would neglect the newborn. If so, the reflex comes from God, the Creator of nature. Nevertheless, there is also deeply the influence of the attribute of mercy, YHWH.

Sefat Emet: It symbolizes the relationship between nature, God, and God. In the depths of nature is God, who acts in a measure of justice – measure for measure, animals eat and eat

But in the depths of God, internally , there is God.

The second mitzva in the chain:

2 And you shall not slaughter him or his son in one day

The reason – again, out of pity.  Here the father and son do not see each other

The Torah is the Torah of Mercy

3 And when you offer a sacrifice of thanksgiving to God, you shall sacrifice according to your will.

Why does it belong to God’s honor?

This is because a thanksgiving offering is brought to the Temple only after a great miracle has happened to a person

The miracle must be great, because the sacrifice is brought to the Temple, and the priests mention the explicit name when the choir of the Levites sings.

After a good thing happened to you beyond what is expected of nature

You will sacrifice as you wish—I do not ask for your thanks.

If you feel that you should be thankful to God, I will accept your sacrifice

Why do we say thank you to YHWH and not to God?

Because God, the Creator of nature, acts out of judgment, not out of mercy

And according to the law, there is no justification for a miracle to happen to us above nature

God does not perform miracles

But deep down there is a quality of mercy, which I felt worked for my benefit

4 On that day he shall eat, and thou shalt not leave of him until morning.

This is an unusual mitzvah.  The thanksgiving sacrifice is brought with 40 challahs that are given to the entire congregation in the temple to eat together immediately, that day and night until morning. In other words, they increase the honor of YHWH in the public

And in all

5 And ye shall keep my commandments, and ye shall do them: I am the LORD.

Rashi says—I decree and observe, I am a king

All My commandments – even if they are not mercy. For example, to execute a murderer.

In other words, don’t identify me with mercy alone. I am Yahweh above mercy. I am the one who turned Sodom and Gomorrah upside down, and I am the one who stopped the Tower of Babel.

Whoever gives thanks for the attribute of mercy stops him

Have mercy on us as you pity a bird’s nest

Do not recognize me – as a king – with only mercy.

I’m Not Sweet Jesus

6 And you shall not profane my holy name.

You will not diminish my honor in the eyes of others.

You shall not behave in a disgraceful manner, you who are known to be observant of My commandments. You have a responsibility

Rambam –

Don’t think I’m weak

That I am not in the world, that I am a prisoner of the evil hand during the winter, and that I will be resurrected in the spring on Pesach

that I am an invention of the weak Jews – Nietzsche the Nazi, and the Iranians and Hamas

6 And I shall be sanctified among the children of Israel.

You must increase My honor among the Israelites

The opposite of desecration of God’s name

By behavior, and even by devotion

Let’s concentrate on the mitzvot

Desecration of God’s Name

The Sixth Mitzvah of Adam and Noah

Moshe returns to Israel – to this and that was given

The children of Noah, too, have a responsibility not to bring about the desecration of God’s name by inappropriate behavior

Moshe added to Israel the obligation to sanctify the glory of God’s name in public, to the point of devotion not to transgress the mitzvot, especially the first three – 77, 31, and 24.  With regard to the others, the prohibition does not apply because it is written and lived in them

Noach would not have commanded this, and therefore the mitzva to give up one’s life did not apply to the sons of Noach.

The Talmud says that even though they are not commanded, the children of Noach have a reward for the sanctification of God’s name

The Talmud also brings stories of non-Jews who sacrificed their lives for YHWH and received a reward from Heaven

Who in the book of Genesis desecrated God’s name?

1 (Rambam) Human: Then he began to be called by the name of Hoya.

It is worth repeating about Enosh because he has gone through everything that Moses says here

Applied – desecrated

Started – Started

1 Mercy for the mother and the newborn

Enosh was the grandson of Adam and Eve and grew up on their knees, learning from them

It is written about him that he was in the form and image of a human being.

אם הוא טעה, וגרם לנזק, הרי זה חילול השׁם

He was full of mercy, and did not eat meat. He fulfilled what is written here in Mitzvah 1 and 2

He inherited from Adam and Eve

The tree of life, and therefore he prolonged his life, like Noach after him

3 Thank you

Manush called upon the name of YHWH, to thank her for a miracle above nature

In his day, the flood began. The sea water rose and covered a third of the land.

Enosh embarked on a journey of repentance and the water stopped.

. Enosh called upon the name of YHWH, that is, he prayed for the attribute of mercy

In this way, he violated the prohibition – for there is no separation between God and His being.

4 Sharing the Many in Gratitude

He is also

He called on his contemporaries to express gratitude, he understood that it was a miracle above nature

There was a giant in body and spirit, an orator.  At the age of 900, he was as young as 30 years old.

He had many students. His descendants also filled the land.  He is considered the father of humanity. To this day, the name Enosh has replaced Adam. We are human beings.

5 And ye shall keep my commandments , even though there is no mercy in them

This is the first mistake of mankind.  He recognized only YHWH with thanksgiving as a measure of mercy and therefore forgot about God. He dismissed the importance of the mitzvot.  He violated the mitzva of the Oneness of God. “Separate the glues.”

On the other hand, there were the sons of Kayin who did the opposite – they worshipped only God – without mercy – and forgot YHWH, and therefore they were called the sons of God.

The two classes separated Hashem and G-d – and thus they violated the prohibition of Ezra at the highest level.

6: Thou shalt not profane my name, my glory

This is a second human error. According to the Rambam, Enush taught that God is a king, he stopped it. The Flood, its honor must be respected. Therefore, one should approach Him in prayer only through angels and seraphim, and even through the stars of the heavens, the sun and the moon.  It’s His Honor to Pray for His Aides

He called them, the servants, by the name of YHWH. That was the beginning.

Over time, says Maimonides, the disciples forgot Hashem and prayed to the stars and the sun themselves, and thus idolatry began in the world

From there, they also spilled over into the transgression of the Talmud of theft and the laws and the desecration of God’s name.

So that Enosh has indeed transgressed everything that Moses says

Until the sanctification of God’s name, which is not said to Adam or to Noach

2 Who else transgressed the desecration of God’s name in the book of Genesis?

Rest after the Flood. Noach learned from Manush but realized that he had made a mistake

He comes from a cult that worshipped only Rahamim

Naama, his wife, came from the sons of Cain who worshipped only G-d

Together they preserved the unity of God and G-d – as in the Shema Yisrael

Therefore, Naama and Noah and their sons were saved from the flood

Despite this, it says

And Noah, the man of the land, began to plant a vineyard and make wine, and he got drunk.

Desecrated the name with inappropriate behavior

Let’s move on to the mitzvah of sanctification of God’s name

Kiddush Holy Name

We said that Adam, Eve, and Noah did not receive such a mitzva to give their souls to Noach

Therefore, there are no children of Noah. They are commanded to sanctify God’s name, but they are rewarded for it

There are examples in the Talmud  –

On the other hand, the Kabbah explicitly commanded Israel to do so. Therefore, the difficult positive mitzva

Told only to Israel

Moshe did not want to add to the children of Noach a mitzva that Noach was not commanded

One must honor God’s name in the eyes of others – in life, by behaving correctly, and even by devotion, and dying for God’s honor

Who did this in the book of Genesis?

Avraham was the first to be thrown into the fire for teaching his generation the Torah that he had heard from Noach

But he did it of his own free will, and not as a commandment to do so.

And even though he was the son of Noah, the children of Noach today are not commanded to die for the sanctification of God’s name in public

How to sanctify Shavuot?

Not to transgress the mitzvot even at the cost of life

But the Rambam says: He should not laugh too much, or eat and drink, so that he should not talk to people except calmly and kindly. Let him respect people, and be offended and not insulted, and negotiate and give in faith – until everyone curses him and loves him and desires his actions, for he has sanctified the name of Heaven… ״

As we learned in Parashat Kedoshim – how to be holy? Withdraw from what is permitted to you

As stated, the sons of Noach do not command this, because Noach would not have commanded it. But the children of Noach have a reward for appropriate behavior that increases the honor of God’s name in public.

The children of Noach can sanctify Shem like Avraham, without being commanded to do so
